Heritage Cemeteries
_______________________________________________________________
The Township of Alnwick/Haldimand is responsible for the maintenance and restoration of six "abandoned" pioneer cemeteries in the Township, under provisions of the Ontario Cemeteries Act. The deeds of these cemeteries have now passed to the Township and conducts yearly maintenance of the grounds, as well as some funds for the restoration of gravestones.
In reality the work to find buried gravestones, repair them and re-site them is a very expensive enterprise, averaging $1,000 each.
The six Heritage Cemeteries are:
- Academy Hill Cemetery
- Bowmanton Pioneer Cemetery
- Gilliland Pioneer Cemetery
- Wesleyan Methodist Cemetery
- Russ Creek Pioneer Cemetery
- Kelley Pioneer Cemetery
Click on any of the above for a brief history of the cemetery. Visitors are welcome to the cemeteries, but are asked to take great care and not, in any way, interfere with the stones. Please appreciate that the text on the stones is weathered and difficult to read, and many stones cannot be found or have broken beyond recognition.
